<procdesc>This data is a combination of corrected GPS (global positioning system) data, heads-up digitizing, and table digitizing from 1:24000 USGS maps. When the source is known at 100% confidence, it is provided in the data set (attribute 'source'). This data will eventually be updated by comparison with 1999 orthorectified true color digital orthophotos.

As new trails are GPSed, they are added to the coverage and the previous trails which have been replaced are deleted. Attribute information is updated accordingly.

The GPS generated data process is as follows:
The features were logged on a Trimble GPS using the Zion_trlrte or ZION_generic data dictionaries.

The spatial data were downloaded from the GPS unit to a personal computer and post-processed for differential correction using base station files from the Dixie National Forest in Cedar City, Utah. The corrected files were exported to an AML. The process software and version was Trimble Pathfinder Office 3.0.

The AML was run to create the coverage; the resulting coverage was checked for attribute completeness during an ArcEdit session. The process software and version was ESRI Arc/INFO 8.3

May 19, 2005:
Coverage edited using ESRI Arc/Info 9.0; Chinle trail segment replaced through GPS using Trimble Pro-XR; one small segment edited using HUD with 1999 True Color Aerial photography to connect old segment with new Chinle segment.</procdesc>

                <procdesc>New data for the Grotto and Canyon Overlook trails was created during the 2005 field season. The Cultural project that created this new data was the "Documentation and Condition Assessment of the Grotto and Canyon Overlook Trails". This new data was utilized to create the Cultural historic trails features linear coverage, histrln. This new data is mostly GPS data. In locations where GPS was not possible, Heads Up Digitizing (HUD) using true color aerials as a background and measurements from field observations were used to create the remaining arcs.

In the Arc/Info ArcEdit environment, deleted the existing Grotto and Canyon Overlook Trail arcs. From a copy of histrln, unsplit the trail tread arcs based on the source of the arcs; GPS versus HUD. Moved these arcs into the trails coverage. In the Arc/Info Arc environment, built the coverage to reestablish topology.

In the Arc/Info ArcEdit environment, created route subclass "trails" and created route features based on name. In the Arc/Info Tables environment, added attribute items to the Route Attribute Table (RAT) which are also in the Arc Attribute Table (AAT); Name, Horse_Use, Compendium, and Comment. Back in the Arc/Info ArcEdit environment, populated the new RAT attribute fields as needed.</procdesc>

                <procdesc>The majority of Lower Emerald Pools Trail was GPS'd using Trimble ProXH. The part closer to the pool wasn't GPS because of the rock over the pool. It was impossible to get satellite signals.
The following trails were GPS'd using Trimble ProXH : Cable mountain Trail, Deertrap Mountain Trail, a part of the West Rim Trail (from Lava point to Scout Lookout), La Verkin Creek Trail and Kolob Arch Trail.
The folllowing trails were GPS'd using Trimble ProXRS: East Mesa Trail, Angels Landing Trail, Kayenta Trail, Middle Emerald pools Trail, Upper emerald pools Trail, a part of the East Rim Trail (the part of the trail that goes from Weeping Rock to Observation point), a part of the West Rim Trail (from the Grotto to Angels Landing) and the majority of Weeping rock (the end of the trail wasn't GPS because it was impossible to get satellite signals).

The PDOP had to be raised for some trails in order to capture satellites.

Datas were differently corrected using Pathfinder Office.
Datas were exported using Pathfinder Office as shape files. All the datas were corrected using Geometry repair in ArcCatalog and converted to coverages using shapetoarc.aml in Arc WorkSattion. Tolerances were set and coordonate systems described. Data were edited in Arcedit and cleaned using Nodeerrors and Intersecterr.

All the trails were added in the coverage "Trails" using the arc command "put". Datas were edited in Arcedit and cleaned using Nodeerrors and Intersecterr. The topology was built using the arc command "build".

The arc command "frequency"was used to check the name errors in trails.aat and trail.ratname.. Some names errors were corrected for the Emerald pools Trails.
The command "frequency" was used to find check errors in trails.aat for : horse-use, compendium, projnm, surveyor, edit_by. Some errors corrected (lack of information or misspelled words).

The arc arrows were checked in trails.aat, in order to creat routes by name in this coverage.

The route and the section by the item "name" were deleted and an other were created for the coverage "Trails" with the arc command Arcroute. The length of the trails (in meters) were calculated using the arc command "Routestats".

The item "Kilometers" was added in Trails.aat (length of the trails in kilometers).
The items "Kilometers", "Miles" and "Feet" (length of the trails in miles and feet) were added in Trails.ratname.
These length in miles, kilometers and feet were calculated in trails.aat and trails.ratname.</procdesc>

            <eaover>TRAILS.AAT:  Arc Attribute Table
FID, Shape, FNODE, TNODE, LPOLY, RPOLY, LENGTH, TRAILS#, and TRAILS-ID are auto generated by Arc/INFO. Please consult ESRI
(http:www.esri.com)
				for information about these first nine attributes.

The following are user defined attributes:
GIS-ID: a unique identifier
NAME: edited names in 2002 with divisional input
USE: Dan Cohan's notes say: "The coverage also includes a day use item based on peak visitor day use data provided by the Backcountry program."
TYPE: Trail
FEET: non-dynamic, user calculated field, feet length of arc
MILES: non-dynamic field, user calculated field, mile length of arc
HORSE-USE: if horses allowed, labeled as Allowed, if not labeled as None
This use is categorized in the Trail Guide for Zion National Park and the Compendium (3/02) to the General Management Plan
COMMENT: general comments and spatial or attribute editing needs
SOURCE: code as to source of the arc:
   1 = GPS collected (differential)
   2 = stable base map
   3 = unstable base map,
   4 = key punched interpolation
   5 = Heads Up Digitizing (HUD)
   6 = HUD with NAD 83 aerials
   7 = HUD with NAD DOQQs
   8 = GPS collected (Recreational grade and not differentially corrected)
   9 = the PUT command was utilized to get this feature from another coverage
10 = arc created by buffering an existing feature
11 = scanned base map
12 = flight GPS
99 = unknown
SOURCE_ED: a second source code, i.e., if the originally arc was GPSed (source=1), but edited using heads-up digitizing, then source_ed = 6
EDIT_BY: person completing the spatial edits, first initial & last name; XXxxxxxxx
EDIT_DATE: date spatial edits were completed; MM/DD/YYYY
ED_COMMENT: comments about completed spatial edits
COMPENDIUM: language from the compendium if appropriate regarding horse-use.
BCODE (integer): codes for display map of 'Stock Use in Zion National Park'
SURVEYOR:  person collecting the data
PARKCODE: the park the data was collected in.
PROGNM:  program name
PROJNM:  project name

The following attributes were created when the GPS data was exported from Trimble Pathfinder Office 3.0 using the
Zion ArcInfo UNIX export routine:
MAX_PDOP: the maximum Positional Dilution of Precision of the GPS collected feature
CORR_TYPE: correction type, i.e. differential correction
RCVR_TYPE: the type of GPS receiver
GPS_DATE: the date feature was collected by GPS
GPS_TIME: the time the feature was collected by GPS
FEAT_NAME:  feature name
DATAFILE: the Trimble Pathfinder Office data file that contains the feature
DATA_DICTI: the Trimble Pathfinder Office data dictionary used to collect the feature
GPS_3DLENGTH: calculated length of the 3 dimensional arc
AVG_VERT_P:  average vertical precision
AVG_HORZ_P:  average horizontal precision
LINE_ID:  line ID

TRAILS.RATTRAILS: Route Attribute Table, Subclass Trails
FID, Shape, TRAILS#, and TRAILS-ID are auto generated by Arc/INFO. Please consult ESRI (http:www.esri.com)
