Sites classified as marine can be either completely marine (sea, ocean or equivalent) or partially marine (coastal or intertidal area). Sites encompassing brackish or tidal waters may be classified as marine, but freshwaters areas should not.
M = This site is within the marine environment / T = This site is within the terrestrial and/or freshwater environments.

The Status (in English) describes the current state of protection of each protected or other conserved area.
Designated = Designated Site recognized or dedicated through temporary or permanent legal means. Implies specific binding commitment to conservation in the long term. / Established – ENGO or Private = Site recognized or dedicated through other effective means. Implies commitment to conservation outcomes in the long term, but not necessarily with legal recognition. / Established - Interim = Site in a process to gain recognition or dedication through legal or other effective means that meets the three following conditions: the area is geographically defined; there is a clear public commitment and intent to complete formal establishment as soon as possible; there are interim protection measures in place that the governing body has deemed effective and appropriate. / Proposed = Site in a process to gain recognition or dedication through legal or other effective means. It should be noted that a site may be managed as a protected area while proposed, as the legal processes of designation may take a long time. / Delisted = Site no longer protected.

Sous-entend un engagement en faveur de résultats en matière de conservation à long terme, mais qui ne comprend pas nécessairement une reconnaissance légale. / Établi – Intérimaire = Site dans le cadre d’un processus suivi pour obtenir une reconnaissance ou une approbation par des moyens juridiques ou autres qui remplissent les trois conditions suivantes : la zone est définie géographiquement; il y a un engagement public clair et l’intention de terminer l’établissement officiel dans le plus bref délai; il existe des mesures de protection provisoires que l’organisme dirigeant a jugées efficaces et appropriées. / Proposé = Site dont le processus pour obtenir la reconnaissance ou l’approbation par les moyens légaux ou autre est en cours.
