defensible space datasets depict 1) structure footprints as polygons and 2)
structure footprints buffered by 100 feet (defensible space areas around
structures).&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;These two datasets are derived
directly from the Marin County impervious surfaces map, which was created by
the University of Vermont’s Spatial Analysis Lab.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;The impervious map was derived from Quality
Level 1 (QL1) lidar data which was collected in early 2019.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Table
1 lists download locations for these datasets.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span style='font-size:13.0pt;'&gt;Detailed
Dataset Description&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;span style='font-size:14.0pt;'&gt;:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The impervious map and derived structure and defensible space datasets were
created using “expert systems” rulesets developed in Trimble Ecognition. These
rulesets combine automated image segmentation with-object based image
classification techniques. In contrast with machine learning approaches, expert
systems rulesets are developed heuristically based on the knowledge of
experienced image analysts.  Key data sets used in the expert systems
rulesets for impervious mapping included:  orthophotography (2018), the
lidar point cloud (2019), and lidar derived rasters.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;After it was produced using Trimble Ecognition, the
preliminary impervious map product was manually edited by a team of UVM’s photo
interpreters.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Manual editing corrected
errors where the automated methods produced incorrect results.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Structure footprints and their associated defensible space
areas were mapped if they had an area greater than 200 square feet.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span style='font-size:13.0pt;'&gt;Data Limitations:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;Building footprints
are derived from the lidar point cloud using mostly automated techniques.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;As a result, false positives (buildings in
the dataset that don’t exist on the ground) do occasionally appear in the
datasets.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;False negatives (buildings
that exist on the ground but not in the dataset) also exist, especially where
houses are partially or totally obscured by tree canopy.&lt;span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
