Description: This layer displays lands protected by the National Wilderness Preservation System of the United States located in Washington State. In the United States Wilderness Areas are protected as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Encompassing over 109,000,000 acres, the wilderness system provides primitive recreational opportunities while preserving some of the most spectacular landscapes and important habitats in the country. The wilderness system was established by the Wilderness Act of 1964 and over the last 50 years congress has continued to add to the system.
