Community centers in Northern Virginia. This layer was created to represent a sector of critical infrastructure in Northern Virginia as a part of larger effort to map critical infrastructure for the region. This GIS layer was updated on 7/9/2024 to include the city of Manassas Park Community Center.

Community center locations from Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun County were compiled from each jurisdiction's open GIS data portal. Please see below for links where data was downloaded from each jurisdiction and specific information for data clean.

Prince William County and the City of Alexandria did not have GIS data for their community centers, so information was collected from each jurisdiction's government webpage containing lists of their community/recreation and senior centers. Information on center names and addresses were then input into an excel table and addresses were separated out by street, city, state, and zip to prepare for geocoding of center locations in ArcGIS pro. Once data was cleaned in Excel, the file containing locations for the two jurisdictions was imported into ArcGIS pro and converted to a table. Using address information, locations for each center were geocoded using the VGIN Composite Geocoding Service, which created a layer of points for each center. Layers for all jurisdictions were then merged and the attribute table was reviewed to ensure that names and addresses for all jurisdictions were uniform.

Arlington County: Community centers were extracted from the county points layer (Data reviewed on 7/9/2024).

Loudoun County: Data for community centers was extracted from the county's "Loudoun County Owned and Leased" polygon layer of county facilities. Community/senior centers were selected and converted to points. (Data reviewed on 7/9/2024).
