"Walkability is a measure of the pedestrian environment within each Census tract. The Walkability Index is comprised of a number of factors that influence whether a person will walk, including land use mix, residential density, retail density, and intersection density. Higher scores represent more walkable areas.
Scores were calculated for each variable per tract, then standardized (Z-score).
The final Walkability score is the sum of all Z-scores (intersection density Z-score was weighted by a factor of two). For more information, see page 85 of the 2013 Health Atlas, which is available as a PDF on the Los Angeles City Planning website, https://planning.lacity.gov.
