Service Description: This point dataset represents named beaches along the California coast and San Francisco Bay derived from OpenStreetMap (OSM) using the natural=beach tag. The dataset includes one point per beach feature, converted from OSM nodes, ways, and relations using the Overpass Turbo API. All inland or non-coastal features were removed to retain only those adjacent to the Pacific Ocean or within the San Francisco Bay shoreline. Each point includes the official OSM beach name and associated OSM feature identifiers.

Description: These data were compiled to provide a consistent, statewide inventory of named beach locations suitable for visualization, access analyses, and integration with other coastal management datasets. The original features were extracted from OpenStreetMap (retrieved October 2025) using the following query:
[out:json][timeout:90];
area["ISO3166-2"="US-CA"]["admin_level"="4"]->.ca;
(
node["natural"="beach"]["name"](area.ca);
way["natural"="beach"]["name"](area.ca);
relation["natural"="beach"]["name"](area.ca);
);
out center tags;
The resulting features were exported to GeoJSON, projected to the working CRS, and converted to an Esri feature class. Non-coastal points (inland lakes, rivers, and reservoirs) were manually removed, retaining only beaches along the California open coast and San Francisco Bay.
Attributes include name, osm_id, feature_type (node/way/relation), and source_date. The dataset can be used as a spatial reference layer for beach access, recreation, environmental justice, or coastal resilience analyses.
