2020 and 2010 Neighborhood Tabulation Areas (NTAs) are approximations of New York City neighborhoods created for the purpose of reporting Decennial Census and American Community Survey (ACS) data. 2020 NTAs are aggregations of 2020 census tracts and nest within 2020 Community District Tabulation Areas (CDTAs). 2020 NTAs were delineated with the need for both geographic specificity and statistical reliability in mind. Consequently, each 2020 NTA contains enough population to mitigate sampling error associated with the ACS yet offers a unit of analysis that is smaller than a Community District.
Though 2020 NTA boundaries and their associated names roughly correspond with many neighborhoods commonly recognized by New Yorkers, 2020 NTAs are not intended to definitively represent neighborhoods, nor are they intended to be exhaustive of all possible names and understandings of neighborhoods throughout New York City. Additionally, non-residential areas including large parks, airports, cemeteries, and other special areas are represented separately within this dataset and are assigned codes according to their type (See NTAType field).
2020 NTAs will not sum exactly to the borough level for the Bronx, Manhattan. This is because Bronx Community District 8 crosses the boundary of Manhattan & the Bronx. Since 2020 NTAs have been configured to fit within 2020 CDTAs, one NTA (BX0802 - Kingsbridge-Marble Hill) needed to straddle the borough boundary given the low population on the Manhattan side of Bronx Community District 8. The NTA for Rikers Island (QN0151) fits within a Queens CDTA, but is part of the borough of the Bronx and is thus assigned a Bronx borough code.
