Description:

This feature class, prepared by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, is composed of rail collision incident data compiled initially by the Illinois Commerce Commission from multiple sources. The data includes location, year of the incident, month, hour of the day, and the characteristics of the location of the crash, including available safety devices. The data includes information about whether the crash took place at a grade crossing or away from a grade crossing, and whether the collision involved a pedestrian, bicyclist, truck, bus, or passenger vehicle. A general description of the action leading to the collision is provided. Personally identifying information and details from the scene have been stripped from the database. Using the CMAP collision identifier, those details are available from CMAP upon request.

The feature class includes collisions that may have involved intentionality. The feature class does not distinguish such collisions from others; if such information is necessary for your project, contact the originator of the feature class, Tom Murtha. More complete information, including sensitive information, is kept on a secure CMAP server. Note that our guidance from IDOT is that collisions should be included in any safety analysis regardless of intentionality.
