Description: Locations of pinniped nursing and pupping areas around Shetland, as plotted in Map 5b(xiv) of the Shetland Marine Spatial Plan. Halichoerus grypus (grey seal) and Phoca vitulina (harbour seal) are designated under the Habitats Directive Annex II and Habitats Directive Annex V. Phoca vitulina is also designated under BAP. Both are recommended to become Priority Marine Features. Data supplied by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU), and Anderson, S. S. (1974). Seals in Shetland. In Goodier, R. (Ed.) Natural Environment of Shetland, pp114-118. NCC. Consultation with SNH is advised.
