Description: Locations of important maerl bed habitats (maerl beds, and maerl or coarse shell gravel with burrowing sea cucumbers) within Shetland's waters, as plotted in Map 5b(ix) of the Shetland Marine Spatial Plan. Maerl beds are a Habitats Directive Annex I habitat, listed on Annex V of the Habitats Directive, are included under BAP and OSPAR habitat lists, and are recommended to become Priority Marine Features. Locally compiled and validated dataset. Data supplied by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), JNCC Marine Recorder, Seasearch, NAFC Marine Centre Marine Developement Section, Moore, J.J. (2006). Survey of the rocky shores in the region of Sullom Voe, Shetland, August 2006. A report to SOTEAG from Aquatic Survey & Monitoring Ltd., Cosheston, Pembrokeshire, and Hjaltland Seafarms Ltd. Consultation with SNH is advised.
