Description: On July 19 and 20, 2019, severe storms with straight line winds and tornados caused significant damage in Langlade and Oconto counties, as well as Polk, Barron, Burnett, Wood, Portage and Waupaca counties. Tornados were also documented in Brown, Lincoln, Marathon and Outagamie counties with many other surrounding areas impacted. Early reports indicated nearly one million acres were affected. On July 21, Governor Tony Evers declared a State of Emergency under Executive Order #35. As a result of the widespread damage in multiple areas of the state, forestry operations kicked into high gear by supporting the needs outlined by Wisconsin Emergency Management through the swift mobilization of saw crews, equipment and overhead in the hardest hit areas. Nearly 120 Forestry staff from around the state were engaged in these recovery efforts at the peak, including representation from staff in Fish, Wildlife & Parks. DNR and USFS staff collected locations of observed damage either via ground or aerial survey. The Storm Damage Disturbance dataset is the collection of those efforts. The data is not to be used as the authoritative source of areas impacted by the July storms as other areas are likely to have sustained damage but were not surveyed by staff. This is a PRELIMINARY dataset, as more data comes in from staff and partners.
