Description: The radioactive mineral occurrences presented in the 12 plates from Nelson-Moore and others (1978) were digitized from georeferenced rasters by Digital Data Services (DDS), Denver, Colorado, under contract with the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS). Additional points from georeferenced figures, not included on the plates, were digitized by the CGS. The CGS converted the original report, in pdf format, to digital spreadsheet format. This included specific information about each occurrence as reported in Nelson-Moore and others (1978, pages 69 to 460). A key from the original document (see page 35) lists the names of the occurrences by county with their corresponding plate id number. This key was used to relate the information in the publication to the points on the map using the county and plate point number. These data were related and imported into GIS. Some locations described in the text and missing from the map plates were included in this data set based on the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) provided in the original occurrence information. The original map plate and figure locations were not checked with the PLSS descriptions provided in the original documents. There may be some discrepancies between the original map/figure locations and PLSS descriptions.NOTES: This data set may be updated from time to time. The spreadsheet associated with this download contains a full list of occurrences (some were never plotted on the maps/figures), a bibliography, acronym descriptions, and some of the tables and appendices from the original pdf report. The download also includes a compilation of the summary of radioactive occurrences in each county.LEGAL NOTICE: This Colorado Geological Survey report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by the United States Government. We used either "unsurveyed", "uncertain", or "unlocatable" if we believed there was any question as to the validity of the location. "Unsurveyed" means that the area where the occurrence is located has not been surveyed into the land-grid system; hence, there is a question as to its exact legal description. This is not of great concern to the user since the township and range lines are projected into the area, and most occurrences can be found. "Uncertain" was used when the location, the directions to the occurrence and/or the described geology did not correlate. This status is a more serious problem for the user than "unsurveyed" because the validity of the location is questionable. "Unlocatable" means either no location was given or the location given is obviously incorrect. This category makes the total validity of the occurrence questionable and its value negligible.LCRM - Location remarks. Fields in ArcGIS were limited to 255 characters therefore, fields (LCRM2, LCRM3) were added to capture additional text from the report.LCRM2 - Location remarks (continued).LCRM3 - Location remarks (continued).QUAD - Topographic Map Quadrangle. The name of the 7 1/2' or 15' U.S. Geological Survey topographic map quadrangle in which the occurrence can be found.MAP - 1° x 2° Map Quadrangle - The name of the 1° x 2° map in the pocket of this volume on which the occurrence is plotted."DVEL - Development - A short description of the type of mining or prospecting that has taken place at the site. Fields were limited to 255 characters therefore, fields (DVEL2, DVEL3, DVEL4) were added to capture additional text from the report.DVEL2 - Development (continued).DVEL3 - Development (continued).DVEL4 - Development (continued).PROD - Production - tonnage and grade. The tons and grade of ore mined with the number of pounds of U3O8 and V2O5 produced. Fields were limited to 255 characters therefore, fields (PROD2, PROD3) were added to capture additional text from the report.PROD2 - Production (continued).PROD3 - Production (continued).BKG - Background Radioactivity---The normal range of the background radiation, reported in either mr/hr (milliroentgens per hour) or cps (counts per second) as measured with a radiation detection device.RNG - Range of Radioactivity. Range of the radioactivity that was found at the occurrence, from normal background to a maximum reading. This, like the background, is reported in mr/hr or cps. In a few cases the range is reported as xbg, which means the range of the radioactivity was recorded as a multiplication of the background rate.HOST - Host Rock. Rock type in which the occurrence is found. Fields were limited to 255 characters therefore, fields were added to capture additional text from the report.HOST2 - Host Rock (continued).HOST3 - Host Rock (continued).ALT - Alteration. Any change in the rock which may be due to emplacement of the uranium or have contributed to the emplacement.STRC - Structural Controls. Any structure in the rock that may have helped to localize the uranium mineralization. Fields were limited to 255 characters therefore, fields (STRC2) were added to capture additional text from the report.STRC2 - Structural Controls (continued).MNZ - Mineralization. The minerals found at the occurrence and any sample analysis data. The analysis is given as a percentage or as parts per million (ppm) of U (uranium or U3O8). The symbol for uranium is given as "U", "eU", and "cU". "U" stands for uranium in its elemental form. "eU" is the symbol for "equivalent uranium" which is the amount of uranium as measured on a radiation detection device such as a scintillometer or Geiger counter. There is not necessarily any uranium at an occurrence that has "eU". The radiation seen on a counter can be caused by radon, radium, or other daughter products of uranium, or by thorium. "cU" means "chemical uranium", an amount that has been measured chemically and is a true measure of uranium in the sample. Fields were limited to 255 characters therefore, fields (MNZ2, MNZ3) were added to capture additional text from the report.MNZ2 - Mineralization (continued).MNZ3 - Mineralization (continued).RMKS - Remarks. Any additional pertinent information. Fields were limited to 255 characters therefore, a field (RMKS2) was added to capture additional text from the report. RMKS2 - Remarks (continued).DOI - Date of information. Date that is applicable to most of the information given on the occurrence.REF - References. These are given in the short citation format of Author and Date. Using this citation, the reference can be found in the accompanying bibliography. For those references that are not listed in the bibliography, a full citation is given. This is not necessarily a complete listing of references for a given property. Fields were limited to 255 characters therefore, fields (REF2, REF3) were added to capture additional text from the report."REF2 - References (continued).REF3 - References (continued).Type - Type of occurrence.Symbol Symbol - GeMS format required field.LocationCo - GeMS format required field.PlotAtScal - GeMS format required field.StationID - GeMS format required field.MapUnit - GeMS format required field.LocationSo - GeMS format required field.DataSource - GeMS format required field.Notes - Notes.Rock_Type - General rock types as indicated on the report plates.SourceImag - Plate or figure used for the location.X - Northing.Y - Easting.CoordSys - Coordinate system of X, Y fields.Source - Source of information.unknown location - Location either not provided in text or on map plates. About 205 locations were not on the original map plates but were reported in the text. The text "unknown location" was added to their IndexName. Some of these locations have section, township, and range as reported in the Location field for each record. If a section, township, and range was reported, these locations were added to the ArcGIS map. If no location or only the township and range were reported, the location was not plotted on the ArcGIS version. Some of the information provided in the Location column does not appear to be correct - some reported township and range fall outside of the county they are reported in. na - not available or unknown

Description: This GIS file is intended to be used for general locations and to provide hyperlinks to the documents and original maps that were created in Adobe Illustrator. The polygons provided here should only be used as a general guide at best. The mining district boundaries in this file were digitized by georeferencing rasters of Burnell's (2015) original files. Therefore, the boundaries may not match exactly with the original areas in the rasters. Additionally, some mining districts are included on different county maps and have different shapes. Therefore, the polygons will not always match the original maps and the polygon edges do not always match. The shapes drawn along county boundaries on the original maps may not match ArcGIS versions of the county boundaries. If they were near or crossed county borders, some mining district descriptions may be included in other county descriptions. Katheryne McGee with the CGS digitized these areas in ArcGIS.Projected Coordinate System: NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_13N
