Name: Sequoia sempervirens Predicted Refugia
Display Field: COUNTY
Type: Feature Layer
Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon
Description: This layer is a copy of the unified fine scale vegetation map for San Mateo, Marin and Sonoma Counties. It is queried to only show the distribution of Sequoia sempervirens across the three-county region that is predicted to become future refugia based on the Conservation Biology paper Syphard and Ristigian-Romsos 2024. The San Mateo and Marin maps represent the state of the landscape in summer, 2018 (pre CZU fire). The Sonoma map represents the state of the landscape in late 2013.The maps were combined by normalizing map class names so that map classes that represent the same (or very similar) vegetation types in each map are assigned the same fine scale map class in this unified version. Similarly, attributes that represent the same, or nearly the same information were similarly normalized. To see the original fine scale vegetation map class from the source vegetation maps, refer to the ‘Original Map Class Field.’Note that there may be slight discrepancies between membership rules for each of the three counties, resulting in differences in mapped types. For more information on the mapping classifications and methods used for each of the individual vegetation maps, visit https://pacificvegmap.org.For more information on the refugia data, see the full datasheet for this product: https://vegmap.press/gg_biosphere_veg_map_datasheet.Attributes for the unified vegetation map are shown in the table below:Attribute Name Attribute Alias Description COUNTY County The county. MAP_CLASS Fine Scale Map Class Fine scale map class, usually (for woody types) at the alliance level of the Manual of California Vegetation. ENHANCED_LIFEFORM Enhanced Lifeform A general classification of land use/land cover type useful for viewing vegetation and landcover with less floristic detail. ABBREV Fine Scale Map Class Abbreviation Fine scale map class abbreviation. ABS_COVER % Veg Returns over 15 Feet % of lidar returns over 15 feet by stand; a good lidar derived proxy for canopy cover. REL_COV Relative Softwood/Hardwood Cover Relative softwood versus hardwood cover, classified into 5 bins. REL_CON_COV Relative Conifer Cover Relative conifer cover as an integer percent (San Mateo and Marin Counties only). REL_HDW_COV Relative Hardwood Cover Relative hardwood cover as an integer percent (San Mateo and Marin Counties only). STAND_HT_MN Stand Height Mean Mean lidar derived stand height for each stand. STAND_HT_MX Stand Height Max Maximum lidar derived stand height for each stand. STAND_HT_SD Stand Height Standard Deviation Standard deviation of lidar derived stand height for each stand. IMPERVIOUS_PERCENT Percent Impervious Percentage of impervious cover for each stand. MAP_CLASS_ORIGINAL Original Map Class Original fine scale map class name.QualityClimate Refugia QualityPredicted quality of climate refugia. High – all three GCM’s predict refugia; medium – two of the three GCM’s predict refugia; low – one GCM predicts refugia; N/A – no GCM’s predict refugia or map class was not included in analysisCCSM_model_90CCSM4 Model “Warmer/ Wetter”‘Yes’ if the CCSM global climate model predicts potential refugia for at least 90.01% of the polygon. ‘No’ if otherwise.CNRM_model_90CNRM-CM5 Model “Hotter/ Wetter”'Yes’ if the CNRM global climate model predicts potential refugia for at least 90.01% of the polygon. ‘No’ if otherwise.MIROC_model_90MIROC-ESM Model “Hotter/ Dryer”'Yes’ if the MIROC global climate model predicts potential refugia for at least 90.01% of the polygon. ‘No’ if otherwise.
